We changed our 12:30pm lunch schedule to 12 midday and it was a wise move. We just made it – there were only a handful of tables left and I felt like a winner when I sat down.

With a reputation preceding it, Chin Chin has a lot to be proud of. Awesome decor the likes of Cookie on Swanston Street and a menu to boot.
Their service is classy except for when they have to reject you cause there are no seats left (oh yes, I have tried before).

SJ had calamari, there was an octopus in there. Yes, I kid thee not, unless SJ has made a fool of me.
I had basil & tofu which was a fiesty, fiesty dish and we both shared fritters.

Beautiful. Spicy.

Highly recommended, but I’m guessing you already knew that.
Plus, did I mention it’s not too pricey for a great bite in the city?

Big generalisation coming up – but I’ve noticed, Indian marketing when done well, focuses on humour.
When I come home late, I often find V chuckling away watching ads like this one on youtube.

I recently flew with IndiGo when I was in India. They’re so savvy – and when you’re in a country with little savvy, you really appreciate it when it comes by. They have an creative in-flight booklet (although it doesn’t seem to update too regularly) and their air hostesses are the hottest ones I’ve seen on any domestic Indian airline; 60s bobs, eye liner and a bit of voom-va-va-voom.

I ordered a Paneer 65 Stuffed Kulcha – and it came in a massive match box. The print style references old school printing techniques for a real “match box” effect – echoing the explosive spice factor. The font pokes fun at old rice and flour packaging which can still be found (and would be considered relevant) all over India.

The last airline this fun – actually, more fun, was Air New Zealand with their bare essentials.

I also took a picture of this little piece of signage to make you smile.

My dearest motherland still use phrases such as “fashion exhibition-cum-sale” and styles their mouth freshner packets much like condom packets (sample here) (thanks Meeks for the pick up).

Kish & Evie is the long time dream of Karishma (the design guru, creative director of Kish+Co) and Vivek (the business brain, founder of Arrow Curtains and Blinds). They’ve been in the design business for four years. Crafting beautiful pieces, of excellent quality and attention to detail is what they’ve always been a part of.

Evie has worked in textiles since he was a child, his parents had a textile mill and he used to sit at his fathers desk and order samosas.
Kish loves designer products and loves making beautiful pieces that people covet. She’s all about the statement piece and less about the basics.

It all began in 2004, when Interior Designer Dearne Herrenberg and a small group of creative women who worked in creative industries and starting their own businesses came together to share information and discuss their big ideas.

In 2009, Graphic Designer Tess McCabe, took over the reigns and has expanded the events and membership database through it’s online presence and word of mouth.

Kish+Co were recently invited to design a cover page to go inside a book for CWC, which we are extremely proud of.

Trudy has also been involved in exhibitions and will continue to shoot commercially along with exhibiting her work and promoting photography as an art form.

December 2011, my and V’s family (young-uns only) went to the Sunburn Festival in Goa and stayed at a boutique hotel called The Sol. 
Interiors designed by Tarun Tahiliani, its all attention to detail. Beautiful furnishings, linen, bedding, photo frames, antique furniture and bathroom candles.
You can see his creams, whites and rich gold tones instantly.
I have to put a mini disclaimer here – we did not go to The Sol for the beach (it doesn’t have a direct connection to one anyways).
If you are looking for one of the most sandy / pure beaches in Goa, grab a scooter and head to Marbela Beach. Have their sangria, its got a heap load of strawberries in it and feels so damn good.

This trip to India found me in love with pom-poms. I think Agnes is probably to blame. These little buds were used to tie the mosquito netting back, however, they can be found at Good Earth as napkin holders as well. Just incase their website doesn’t showcase enough – heres a beautiful link to the interiors of one of their stores.

Yes darling, that is an elephant in there. Would be awesome to be able to teleport to those times.

I love those vintage doors. My mother-in-law has promised me, when I’m ready for furniture, we’re going to get all this intense, over the top, antique furniture. I can’t wait.
The Sol also has a sweet (read: small) pool and a Thai menu. Their cold coffee is awesome and don’t read the sign which says “No drinks allowed”, just go on and order the ice and get the session going.

Goa is famous for its Portugese architecture. We took a drive to Panjim, which is the capital city of Goa and right opposite Wendell Rodricks is this sweet building. Looked like a cafe from the outside, turned out to be a government office indoors.

So super fine retro. I wish we could convert it. Turn Goans into coffee fiends. Sounds like a plan.

It was on two Sundays ago and it was packed. If you thought our design markets were bad…
I know this is semi-tongue in cheek as I am about to barrage you with design love – but I wanted to share some Oslo Davis findings I saw on Lucy’s blog and some thoughts on consumerism which I found on the Musing Mutley blog (V would love that ish).
Sometimes I look at what I like and I think, damnit Kish, you are just as “ugh” as the rest of them. But I can’t help myself. I love gorgeous things that make me feel like I must be gorgeous too.

So can I get started already? There is so much to show you.

Dawn TAN!!
We love Dawn Tan. She’s inspired us and Agnes has learnt watercolour with her. So much so, that you can see a fair bit of watercolour in our work – we’ve got a website coming up for Choose to be Calm, we did the Mercy Newsletters with watercolour as well.

Dawn continues to reinvent herself in cooler and cooler ways. I mean a burger plate? And a meaty pillow case? I adore. This sweet lady is going places. You can buy her pieces here. 
 

Golden Ink are a new mention on the Kish+Co blog. I’ve always admired their pieces, this time they had a beautiful stall and fresh flowers. I’m a sucker for fresh flowers. You can also find them available at Edition X. 

I’ve known Indie for a while now – before Monolog took a leap and burst onto the locally made Melbourne scene. Her pieces are all fully local and I love her prints (100% organic Melbourne).

I have more shoes than cotton t-shirts, so I’ve put in an order for these little treats here. And that, I have promised V, will be the end to my summer splurges (though after a very quiet winter, between you and me, I doubt it…).

I also caught up with So Little Time Co. and had the longest chat with her. They’ve been doing markets outside of Melbourne as well and she’s looking forward to a quieter January. All her pieces are handmade + painted on. So sometimes, she’ll even paint on the spot if there is a piece in high demand. Now that my friend, is hard work. I took pictures, but the light was poos. You can purchase her handmade pieces here - if you do see her at markets, she is so friendly and sweet you could probably say “hi” to her and know that she’d have a sweet chat with you too.

For some reason, I didn’t realise Anuj would have wild, untamed locks of hair and appear on a motor bike. Instant “indie” appeal.
Me & Meeks, both in our “good-Indian-girl” garb wished we brought our nipped at the waist summer dresses (well, hers are nipped at the waist and mine are always shorter than they should be) and wavy locks along with us.

Anuj is super cool and casual for a fashion designer. No signs of wankiness whatsoever.
Proud of his work and with a strong understanding of craftmanship, he talked us through all the Q’s and the A’s.

With 3 workmen in his studio and he showed us his collection, inspiration wall and photo swatches.

Yes, I should have congratulated this sweet man on his incredible moustache, but he made me nervous. He whipped that piece up while we were at the studio by the way…

The deceptive and incredible fact about his work – is that there is no needle. No string. No joining. No fuss. Its a flexible piece of art to be worn as you wish.

How do I even begin to explain this. Its a series of rubber bands and buttons.

I’m guessing this is the one post that is going to be up on multiple Melbourne blogs at the moment. I might as well get stuck into it in that case?

For those who don’t know much about Lucy... Blogging since 2008, she got her leap when one of her blogs was featured on Design*Sponge. She speaks at design events, is featured in Conversations with Creative Women by Tess McCabe and is quite the Melbourne phenomenon.

If you’re looking to buy design products that are Australian made and just design products in general, her blog is comprehensive. Its also a step into the most gorgeous homes ever. So much so, I can’t keep up. Partially cause she updates regularly and I have house envy on a daily basis. You understand don’t you?

Anyhoo – this is for anyone who’s wondering whether to venture in on Saturday and Sunday or not to. I suspect it will be packed much like tuna in a can due to her popularity.
I’m just giving you a picture overload. If you tick off this list with a “yes” by 80% – then go for it!

• You’re planning on doing the decor for your own place
• Your work in interiors and want to be inspired
• You’ve got a mint little budget from your adoring hubby and you know you want to blow it on all things design (I could not tick this box by a far mile, luckily I didn’t get told off today when I did my first impulse buy of the year without running it by the man…)

• You usually get your furniture from that shop in that mall and you want to know about some place new

We went upstairs first. It felt airy-er and we were right.

I love these brown glasses. Such gorgeous natural hues and organic shapes. Wank wank wank I LOVE IT.

The sweetest assistant costumes. This is a well curated, prepared, marketed event – down to the last detail. I shit thee not. All helpers have yellow dotted t-shirts and it is gorgeousness.

I told you Melbourne was ready for the colour. Leanne and I found it interesting that the dining was upstairs and we liked it. Theres also a summer deck outside which fits in perfectly with the dining upstairs idea.

You’ll find the gorgeous Dawn Tan’s work in the kitchen.

Le shelves. They’re featured hugely in all the marketing collateral. Can you spot my Wally?

Shelf close up. I had a moment when I was thinking, how nice does a house look with “non-real-stuff” which is all display? Reminds me of all those homes for sale we stalked in 2008.

Umbrella holder. Divine. Really darling. Madly.

Contemporary Christmas tree much? I think these are the best I’ve seen. Roe and I both have issues with Christmas. Personally, I struggle with the green, red, gold combo. So much so, I can’t buy saris in either shade. I don’t know if they’re selling these, but if they were and my kids (haven’t happened yet), really wanted a tree, this would be it. This would be THE tree. My poor children.

And thats how I’d like to finish. Of all the pieces in the entirety of the home, this is the one I coveted. It was $1100 and its sold. By Lucas Grogan, whom I have a crush on and who’s gorgeous graffiti I saw on Sunday (and before) on Hosier Lane here.

So we went on a 2 hour car ride to visit this river experience that N really wanted to try.
It looked like this:

AKA – the floating gardens of Xochimilco. 
And at the time, we felt like… hmmm, 2 hour car ride for this?
(Looking back, I see the value; listening to a real live Mariachi band, being on the type of boat rides that fill the weekend lifestyle of local Mexicans, and there are lots of black and white photographs of Frida Kahlo doing the same…).
But at the time. We all looked at N and had a good laugh.

Fortunately, not too far, in a nearby neighbourhood (Coyoacán), there is a gorgeous restaurant. Highly recommended by many.
Los Danzantes. Of course, it helps that Frida’s house (no photography permitted, hence no blog post) is also in the same district.

Pre-lunch. Sip it don’t slurp it. Or it will BURN.
Mezcal is so potent, even N couldn’t finish hers.

All I can say is, I would fly back to Mexico for these memelas.
Traditional memelas the griddle with salsa verde, salsa roja and pestle, Cotija cheese accompanied matured and onion.

Yes, that is a zucchini flower. No, in Mexico they don’t frill it up as if its the piece that makes the dish.
Peasant soup with pumpkin, quelites, squash and corn.

Filled hoja santa Oaxaca cheese and goat cheese on a tomato sauce and green chile meco.
I judge food on how it looks. I’m really terrible at trying food which doesn’t look good. (Meeks is better than me and tried everything when we were in India – and I’m meant to be the Indian in the house). This rather interesting looking leaf concoction is divine. Worth trying.

All this is making me so hungry its not funny. And in the mood to travel again…

I did this out of curiosity.
The findings are extremely interesting. This doesn’t mean I’m taking your print work to India.

As with all things at Kish+Co, we try to understand our clients better to provide them a service match to their spec. And this is why I find it absolutely essential to present them with all the options possible.

Huge congrats to a dear friend, Tess. I’ve known her for quite some time now and have been to some of the events as well.
A huge achievement, she started the process this year (2011 guys. That is colossal!) and it is quite a book.

We caught up with dear friends, Kelly, SoLittleTimeCo and made new friends, Kirsten and BusiChic (in quite a round-a-about way). 

We spotted our design for Masayo Yasuki’s page. Kudos to Agnes, Roe, Jacquie and our good ol manly man, Sayher, who have their names in print. Its a gorgeous book, you can find it selling in markets, online and in bookshops in Australia. Take a peek on the CWC website for more update information.

They had a raffle and these were the prizes. Somehow, I’ve never won a raffle in my life. This event didn’t change that…Gutted!

A bit about the Kelly Love collection.  

It started with a song. A collaboration with up and coming band Nova’s Basement followed which then morphed into the AW2011 collection;

Song of the Rainbird

A collection of 60′s inspired garments with reference to the correlation between muses of fallen rock stars and beautiful birds in cages. A journey of angst and glamour as the muse copes with the impending loss of her beautiful yet unfortunate life.

The collection embodies sex appeal with timeless elegance combining beautifully cut pieces with clean lines, precise workmanship and hints of femininity & quirkiness. Exclusive prints are featured on heavily sand washed silk, painted fur and mohair give texture while wool and suede add a luxe appeal to this collection.

The colour palette sees French navy, contrasting black against white & dusky grey punctuated by pops of dark fuchsia and olive.

Earlier this year, I made one of those harried visits to Auckland to be with the sisters. We went out for drinks to The CornerBar and after that, Meeks took me to the hotel for dessert.
I’m enchanted by designer hotels. N actually beat me to it when she said we should go to Puebla purely to stay at the hotel, La Purificadora.

It’s not out of wanky-ness – okay, maybe 3% wanky-ness.
But why would you stay at the Sheraton or the Taj or the Hilton?
Everything is stock standard and you’re paying a price for the monotony?
Yes, I know… “dependability / reliability / easier to find / tea coffee in a tray (thats my dad’s rationale)”.
UGH.

Would you go to McD’s over your cool burger place up the road?
And designer hotels aren’t even that expensive when compared to your average 5 star hotel.

You can indulge in the beautiful details from the wallpaper, to the lighting, the soap range (I now buy Malin+Goetz since having found it at Tribeca Grand), the art, the food – yes the food.
And every place feels different and is so lovely crafted by people who care about the details.

Hotel DeBrett is one of those places.

Here are some idea’s we designed for the branding of a Melbourne cafe. After a long time of brainstorming and research, this olive texta concept using text only was what we ended up with.

First we trialled a number of different serif fonts with different mediums such as texta, pencil, pen, fineliner, etc. These were the 3 fonts we narrowed it down to:

One of our other concepts was to use layers of paper cut-outs to form regions in the world where different coffee originates from. This idea is to educate people on where the coffee beans originates from and it’s journey to Melbourne.

Trialling different paper stock & samples for our cut-out regions. This was the colour palette we agreed on:

Since then, he’s been overly celebrity endorsed (Aish, Vidya, Rani) and is one of the leading designers in India. Needless to say, seeing his work around is such excess has put me off the usual attraction I would have for such finery.

Anyhoo, M and I recently visited the Sabyasachi Showroom in Kolkata.  It was exquisite. Dark, den-like, musty from the small of incense and with the sweet sounds of Bengali tunes, it was a treat for nearly all the senses (unfortunately, we weren’t served any mishti doi or it would have been perfect).

He’s created an ethereal experience and you need to see it in person to fully appreciate it. Down to every detail, every plate, photograph, memory, trunk, glass jar and rug has been positioned to perfection.

I’ve managed to find a site on the interiors – one of my favourite Desi sites (check out the cool styling!), Mumbai Boss.  Flick through the gallery to learn more about the process and see the details. (Sorry, the lighting is very dim in the store when you go in).

It’s sad, but I almost felt let down when I saw uber-rich women trying on their saris and ignoring the gorgeousness of his boutique. It was a contrast of the senses and I thought, well obviously, high society makes it to the purchase section, whereas the artists wonder around the entirety of the boutique in awe and leave without a purchase.

Do go if you’re in Calcutta, its arresting to say the least.

I recently went to the Pop-Up Markets in Prahran. There are a fair few artists there and a range of fun things to be treated with plus food too.
Of all the vendors, I found Elpple (AKA Ellen Grace) and I really liked her work.

She’s very quiet and her work is bold and colourful.

I can’t even remember when I went to Manchester Press, except that it was a really long time ago.
At the time, I didn’t want to share it because I thought it would become one of those overly popular places that you can’t get a foot in the door.
However, I’ve been several times since and its is still ever so lovely.

Its a place where you can order a mean bagel and sit and read for as long as you want.
They aren’t stingy or difficult and more importantly, you don’t get that “we are Melbourne cool so lets pretend we can’t smile” type of feel.

If I lived in the city, it would be the place I would want to make my local (are you listening V?) and pop down for brekkie everyday.

We had the pleasure of being asked to design a cover page in The Creative Women’s Circle exciting first book release – ‘Conversations with Creative Women’ for the talented fashion designer Masayo Yasuki.

With a brief of designing a typographic title page Masayo Yasuki’s interview that is aesthetically sympathetic to her work, we thought it would be appropriate to use different materials as a medium.

Whilst researching Masayo’s fashion line Dogstar, we came across her vibrant piece ‘The Congo Dress’ that featured a flowing lemon yellow skirt with a bold pattern scattered across it. We took the yellow element of her piece with these raw beautiful patterns and combined it with Masayo’s use of varied fabric textures to spell out her name in a manner that was indicative of the fashion industry, like a shot from a fashion shoot. Working with CWC’s creator Tess McCabe has been a pleasure. Having the opportunity to work with other creative women (as well as taking a break from our computers), it was exciting to make a piece that was hand-made as well as contributing to a book that will inspire and entertain all creative people.

About the book:

This year for my birthday, my dear friends took me to Golden Fields. 
It is a stunning spot in St. Kilda – and ticked the boxes.

The interiors are … well… nothing short of amazing. Let me give you the checklist to explain where I’m coming from:

• white tiles – I’m not tired of this just yet…
• a sense of space – I will never get tired of this.
• lighting pieces that are not industrial and are not single bulbs with lots of wire
• gold foiling on the identity – I think the payment for a gold foil means you don’t need to pay for an actual identity. Did I say that? I think I did.
• awkward element that is semi-intimidating and cool at the same time – red claws upon a bare wall (I have a theory, if you push something like a skull / blood / aggressive patterns / crazy prints / a fat rock on a ring – etc on a minimal level, its sparks enough of a debate to get considered and then taken on as “crazy / cool”)
• taking an ordinary object such as a sugar bowl and styling it up (see cool tin in picture no. 2)

Romance doesn’t come easily to V. Phrases such as “pulling teeth” come to mind. Thankfully, the Arrow and Kish+Co offices now have women who are with amazing men. And those men do things like; surprises, flowers, chocolate, birthday treats etc. Therefore, I no longer need to argue my point.

Needless to say, he took me to Monsalvat this year.  It is a sweet, sweet place with lots of art and gorgeousness. Cottages upon a hill (I say cottages, but it feels like a mini-mansion to me), peacocks strutting and flying and landing (truly, I saw one swoop!), artists in residence, a sweet, tiny little chapel and an awesome old school swimming pool.

If you do have a summer day to spare in Melbourne, it is a stunning place to get some rest and wonder about.

Prior to visiting Mexico, I did a whole lot of research for designers, artists and creative personalities and Carla’s name was all over the show.
From Design Indaba to IQONs to ID Magazine, this incredibly talented and down to earth woman is design famous.

We caught up for a chat in her new store, which you can find at Moliere 58, Polanco, Mexico City.
White walls, custom made furniture, a 70s styled cabinet and a gorgeous mural from staple pieces which represents the ethic of Taller Flora in a sassy / sophisticated space.

Carla on home.
Carla has a boy and a girl aged 4 & 5 and a darling artist partner, Pedro – who can take credit for the store interiors as well as being an incredible artist. Her children don’t mind her work hours so long as they get to come along on overseas trips (this may be a deal I strike sometime later!). I’ve always worried about having children and how they can consume your life – to which Carla smiles and says to me “that will only happen if you want it to”. And I’m okay with that.

She grew up loving it and says “I wish I had a grandmother with an atelier”. The feeling is entirely mutual.

Carla on her process.
When markets moved to China from Mexico for garment production, they left a huge gap in Mexico’s labour force. Carla works with local communities, predominantly in Puebla. Holding training workshops for as many as 1000 women, she guides women on how to create her fabrics and her embroidery work. Often the women in these locations speak a local dialect – in which case she hires translators to work with.

She loves that she can provide “opportunities of work to people with amazing hands and ideas”.

Currently, her pieces push a lot of geometric shapes, traditional to Mexico. She mentions local words; huipil, rebozos, guayaberas, charros and I grimace. I did my reading on designers, not traditional dress. Now that I’ve googled them, I can see the geometric shapes she’s talking about and where the crux of her collection is derived from.

I’m surprised by her use of neutral colours, wondering if it’s always as soft as I’m seeing it and it turns out that I’ve missed out her Spring – Summer collection by a few days, which would have had me drunk on colour and embroidery. I heart. And I promise to buy online.

We recently introduced N to “Bhuja”.

N is Malaysian-Indian.

Needless to say, the packet of Bhuja didn’t leave her hands for a quite a while…

That was when it dawned on me. If N is mostly Indian and she doesn’t know about the glory of Indian street food. That means most of you don’t either….

Indian Street Food. More commonly known as Chaat.

Its a lot like Pringles. “Once you pop, you can’t stop”.

When I first came to Melbourne, Gujju’s was our regular haunt. I think Chaat may be the reason I married my man. He’s the only homeboy I know of who can whip up a chaat dish for me on demand. Damn fine.

But recently, it’s kicked back in with the goodness.

Go order yourself dahi puri, sev puri and bhel puri.

I wouldn’t go near the Indian style Chinese – the chilli paneer got me moody.

Ever since my greener years, I’ve always enjoyed going to paper / craft fairs – a good chance to check out the latest paper offerings and trends, but moreso (to my wallet’s horror) a day to spend, spend, spend on trivial things like coloured paper, tangerine coloured stamp pads and cupcake shaped flock stickers!

I recently attended a event called the ‘Paperific (maybe I’m not so alone in taking words from the fictionary after all…) Expo’, which is usually held twice a year, and runs over three days to include stores devoted to promoting papercraft wares such as die-cutting tools, new stamping techniques, assorted scrapbooking papers, whilst holding demonstrations and classes throughout the day.

Walked about 3 steps into the venue, eyes-widened from the ocean of paper goods before me and almost rubbed my hands with glee. To sum it up, here follows a sprinkling of words describing the Paperific experience;

Rustling of kaleidoscope-flavoured paper, ink sponges in colours of the rainbow, kitsch and cute aplenty, a shower of fine glitter dust here, a clever folding of card there, freshly permed silver crowns gather round for the demonstration, eyes light up when appreciating their own handiwork, a chuffed kish+co designer admires her newly purchased lime green envelopes, ponders oh the possibilities!

R(oe/weena): Hello, how are you?

A(ggs/gnes/ngus/nges): Hullo! I’m good thanks : )
…why do you get to be the interviewer and I am the intervieweeee? haha

R: Anyways…. (awkward silence)…. From the 2 days at Semi-Permanent, who inspired you the most and why?

A: I felt like each speaker at Semi was inspiring in their own way, but my favourite speakers would probably have to be the last two; Scott Dadich (radness in layout / publication design) and Platon (AMAZEing portrait photography) – and they were buddies too! Talk about a dynamic duo.

R: Who would you like to see at SP next year?

A: Stefan Sagmeister (typical designer answer.)
Ebony Bizys (hellosandwich) – Aussie graphic designer living in Japan. Previous senior designer at Vogue Living. Love her style.
James Gulliver Hancock – awesome illustrator.
Bakerella! (Angie Dudley) – one of my baking idols who created cupcake pops : ) she’s a (culinary) designer in a sense!

R: (Rowena wakes up)….What did you have for lunch on the first day of SP?

A: I had a scrumptious chicken, avocado and mayo focaccia (which I was supposed to go halvies which Jac but I accidentally ate it all and then remembered after… oops)
And I also had a massive icecream after – yay for cavities!

R: OMG! I had the exact same foccacia on the 2nd day!!!! It was so expensive! Was the goodie bag any good?

A: It made me look like ‘the bag lady’. I was already carrying two bags, so an additional one to carry around resulted in a unintentional pack-horse effect.
Overall, it was pretty good though. Contained a book of illustrations/designs from various artists and numerous flyers about what-not.

R: Did you cry during Platon’s talk?

A: You were handing me a bucket to catch the waterfall remember? ….nah I didn’t actually - did you?

R: No…

A: I did feel however feel that fuzzy sense of awe when one is in the presence of someone who has done really great work, and when you listen to someone who truly engages you. I was also very moved by a particular photograph he took of a mother cradling her son’s grave – he was an Muslim American soldier who died in war – and the image really touched me. I was spellbound by the emotion, power, both the hidden and obvious messages in his photographs.

R: Have you watched Legend of the Guardians yet?

A: I think I’m about to this weekend (thanks to Angela who has lent us the DVD)! After seeing the intense behind-the-scenes work on the digital animation by Animal Logic, I’m really interested to see how it all panned out. (Apparently it took 18 months (!!) to ‘develop’ the animation for one single owl. Wowee.)

R: What about Sucker Punch?

A: er, no sorry. My friend had wanted to watch it last year, but I was turned off by the corny trailers .__.

R: It’s actually a pretty good movie…

R: Do you feel like a career change after going to SP?

A: No, if anything it reconfirmed my love of design – I think it’s exciting to be introduced to interesting, different design and art, things I may not have ever seen or heard of, and even better to hear the thought process, and explanation behind them. Certain things garner much more respect and understanding when the context has been explained & this definitely applies to the way I look at things.
… however, I am oh-so-tempted to try & become a paper-artist … making pop-up books for a living sounds grand, don’t cha think?

R: Totally! Pop-up-paper-anything, what more could you want? I can see you doing more craftier things! What do you think about the Melbourne Convention Centre?

A: Stairs, parallel lines / beams, colourful.

R: Any pieces of work there that made you think, “Why didn’t I think of doing that?”

A: A lot of the advertisement campaigns by creative agency Droga 5 were really clever, and gave me that ‘Damn that was a smart idea!’ feeling.

R: If you could work with any of the speakers for 3 months, who would it be?

A: I would love to work for WIRED magazine (under Scott Dadich) – the layout designs he showed us gave me all sorts of tingles. (in a good, non-pins-and-needley way)
But I’d also love to be an paper-apprentice with Benja Harney who has created an illustrious career out of ‘paper engineering’ – he’s a clever lad that one. (And no paper cuts in his entire career too!)

R: Did you see anyone you know in the crowd?

A: You! And Jacquie! Cory, our previous web developer, and also a few friends I’d gone to TAFE and uni with. And Ned (Culic) who was my lecturer at Uni – I think he should speak at Semi one day! : )

R: You saw NED!!!

R: How do you feel about Christopher Walken?

A: Although Platon‘s talk wasn’t so much about technique and photography tips (which coming from him would’ve been very swell), it was extremely entertaining because of the stories he told about each client he photographed. I think Platon’s description for Mr. Walken gave me the impression that he was quite eccentric. Or just crazy.

Platon said the first thing Christopher Walken did when he walked into the photoshoot – which was in Platon’s hotel room – was walk straight into the kitchen, and open all the cupboards. Platon, perplexed about Walken’s behaviour asked him ‘Are you hungry Sir?’

To which Walken paused in his rummaging, turned to Platon and replied “No. Are you?”

Strange times, strange times.

(Both of them crack up laughing)

R: Did you like the shoes Scott Dadich was wearing?

A: Er, I’m afraid I wasn’t sitting close enough to the stage to see them, but I’m sure they were a pair of those spiffy pointy gentlemen shoes that look very classy.
(He probably could’ve turned up in Crocs and I’d still admire him : )

R: 

R: If you were rich, what would you do for someone else?

A: Hmm, so so many things to support the different needs of all those around me… but I would also love to use the money to start up a design studio / hub which was completely devoted to creating charity design work; using design to help those in need / to give back to the community. And this ‘hub’ could be a sort of charity-base for all designers / artists, each designer could have their ‘stint’ (or we could have a Friday off a week / fortnight to work in that ‘hub’), or say a designer could spend a month or so in the studio, then return back to their everyday studio (got to pay the bills somehow right?) and so on. It would also be a great opportunity for designers to come together, and collaborate. Different designers, from different studios, backgrounds, cultures, whatever, working together for a common cause. Now that’s what I’d like to create for ‘someone else’.

There were two key aspects to the night

1. Introduce people to our new company name – Kish+Co
2. Support local artists (32 in total) and create an atmosphere where art doesn’t feel intimidating and is easier to understand as well as a chance to meet the artists themselves.

If you’re planning an event, these are the mistakes you need not make and these are the cool things you could consider as well : )

1. Sourcing artists. 
We interviewed all of our artists, ensured that they filled forms and brought in samples of their work.
All submitted on time and were thrilled to be a part of such an opportunity.

2. Save The Date. 
We should have probably titled this “RSVP now”.
We created a “Yes” option and a “No” option for people.
This marked the start of the design styling for the event as well.

3. Mail out Tickets or E-mail. 
We saved a lot of funds (to be used for beers later) by emailing .pdf tickets.
We sent out printed tickets to key clients.
We also created a map to guide people to the event and let them know where to park.

Goodie Bags
The Kish goodie bags are becoming a bit of a regular appearance at our parties.
Designed by us and made for us with love by VAK Exim, they are a staple designer item which we could really sell, but choose to give instead!
Every year, the goodies get even better.
This year, we had San Pellegrino water (from the lovely folks at The Catering Co), toothbrush kits from DHealth, cookies from Blossom Baking, luggage tags from Yellow Tail, necklaces from Lola&Bailey, chocolates from Pom by Pomegranate, oranges (yep, that was us!), notepads from Briamar Press, magazines from Desktop and a mixed set of postcards, flyers and coolness.

Name Badges
All the artists and helpers on the night had a badge.
They were quirky and cool – while neither feminine nor masculine. Ask Aggs for a detailed how to, she is incredibly patient with paper…

Signage
Everything in line with the design of the event, we made signs for toilets, entry, exit and more.

Division of Labour
With so much going on, sharing the jobs and the responsibilities became immense. We used colour codes for the designers and the management team – to know whom was responsible for what. We also had an .ical file to match.

Every great event needs some good loving to keep it alive. These are the key businesses they supported us with essentials on the night.

Press & exposure
We had a list of Melbournes beloved in design as well as editorial related contacts.
We got a lot of love, some even in added to the Goodie bags.
This is something I’d recommend doing sooner – even if its just an email, I managed to get Australian Edge and Lara Cameron to attend the event with a last minute email the week before. A lot of people did underestimate the size of the event – 400 people = no joke : ) It was a good thing Ms Critique told me to try our luck – no harm. Thanks sugar.

Help. Moral Support. Hugs.
We rallied our beautiful friends & family for the final days as well as artists volunteering through the week.
We had assigned specific tasks for everyone, trying to ensure they got breaks to enjoy themselves through the night.

Thank yous.
Our darling Aggs made cake pops for everyone, we also got photoframes for key helpers on the night and I made batches of dahl through the week to keep people fed!

Planning out Station Points
We mapped out the location, where we needed key people and whom would be standing where.
This ensured that when people needed help, they knew where to turn and whom they could speak to.
We also realised this had to be flexible – Angela and I had to tell people that the silent auction was ending, so we needed to rally the crowd as well.

Speeches
A speech ties an event together. I thought with 400 people and no microphone would make a speech impossible.
Turns out, all I need are cartons of beer + a smile.
Also, we learnt, it’s really important to have faces to an event and the more you can push those faces, the more you can make relationships with people on the night.

Art Related Collateral
To introduce viewers to artists on the night, we created a booklet full of the artists, their bios and a little bit about the night. It’s a stunning little piece which everyone gets as a memoir to the night.
We also created certificates and purchase slips for buyers on the night.
I wish we’d thought a bit further and wrapped the artwork in a branded wrap, so it really felt like an official purchase.

Updating your website

Getting a bouncer

The aftermath (unlike me, we don’t recommend drinking shots the night before, cause come Saturday morning, your head will hurt)

Photography – this is key. Just as important as the event, is the post marketing of the event. Getting the photography right is essential.

Facebook Check-ins

Twitter updates – we found our market was more active on Twitter than they are on Facebook

Business Card Bowl – Thank god for mentors (they remind you of the most pertinent of things!) – we had 400 people coming and we needed to know whom they were and how we could get in touch with them!

Sorry – I couldn’t think of a better word for rapid growth that sounded organic enough…

We all naturally started to feel that Miss Kish was the young us and started thinking of new names to call ourselves.
It was particularly awkward when Sayher (our manly-man) would pick up the phone and say “Miss Kish, Sayher speaking”.

Kish+Co was our top choice.
It still had Kish in it and was inclusive of all of us.

We started working on a rebrand.
We started telling people.

People had formed an emotional attachment to Miss Kish.
They loved the warmth, the colour, the personality and the overall good vibes.
And they were nervous it will all go away as we became a company.

To ease the pain, we made (in true Kish style) a stunning animation.

We gradually introduced the new brand;

• and it took off from there.

Through being a glass major she came to discover that when the process of creating her work went badly, it had devastating consequences. Alternatively, when the creation of a piece went smoothly, she discovered it could be astonishingly beautiful. Glass is a fragile and unforgiving medium, which was something Emily had to come to terms with early on.

Emily’s process of glass casting is an ever changing, learning process. Each piece produced uses a slightly varied process and each piece is original and one of a kind. It is rare in any aspect of glass art that any two pieces will be exactly alike. The attraction she has found to the medium is that the artist is always moving forward, growing and changing, commensurate with the work itself.

With a background in digital arts, and a love for both the digital and real world, Roger is now focusing on producing more traditional art, trying to keep a harmonious blend between the two. You see this in the works he has produced, using varied hand-drawn elements in animations and designing a typeface made from books and other objects.

We here at Kish + Co can’t wait to see the final animation he has instore for our exhibition / launch party!

This highly imaginative artist has briefly lived in Edinburgh and travelled the world before settling back in Australia to study illustration. Recently graduating and winning the Highly Commended Prize at Pimp my MUF (Melbourne Ukelele Festival), Belinda is currently working on her own book of short stories filled with illustrations from none other than Belinda Suzette.

Combining both digital and traditional media to create unique, friendly illustrations, Tom’s work is suitable for all printed platforms including books, advertisements and editorials to name a few.

Tom enjoys using saturated and slightly exaggerated colours to depict beautiful scenes of nature and fantasy concepts.

Aliça’s art practice explores painting installation, embracing traditional and non-traditional modes of display. The work is often site specific, considering the architectural space and light source in each venue. Broad and casual brush marks, structural forms and pastel colours that indicate qualities of light on dark are predominant features within her paintings. They occupy the liminal space between abstraction and figuration and are focused on engaging the viewer in the act of sensory viewing and projecting.

Kathryn Renowden is a Melbourne based illustrator, designer and artist with a passion for printmaking. She enjoys creating work in a diverse range of media, from watercolour, acrylic and ink, to digital painting and collage.

Her illustrations incorporate anthropomorphic animals and absurd characters rendered in vivid colours.

One of her greatest pleasures is copperplate etching. Her detailed line work translates well to the medium and the process often produces some wonderful and unexpected results. Kathryn loves exploring new surfaces to illustrate on – from dinner plates and textiles, to gasmasks, Japanese fans and shoes.

Her list of clients includes the Darebin City Council, Halsinky Project, M Division Recordings and Sabi Sleepwear.

We are very excited to announce that Louise Kyriakou is taking part in our exhibition launch in August!

Louise  is an illustrator who creates imagery with a strong design foundation, and a sprinkling of humour. She recently won an Illustrators Australia Bronze Award for her series of illustrations in Fast Ed’s latest cookbook, “An Hour’s the Limit” (Random House).

The commission focused on one her favourite things; cooking and eating good food. The recipe to her artwork involves combining a bold colour palette, mixed with a playful inventiveness, and stylisation that harks back to the mid-century poster designs and picture book illustrations that she admires so much.

Dave’s oil paintings examine concepts of light and shade in an attempt to bridge the gap between the unknown and the witnessed. His small studies of unassuming moments – an old lamp shade, the illuminated apartments across the street, an empty hallway – glisten with silky blackness and golden warmth. Utilising the illuminatory and fleeting quality of sun, flame and globe, each scene houses within it the purity of the human visual experience.

Have a read of his blog. Dave seems to be a cat man, and if I may say so myself, anyone who is a cat-lover is a friend of mine. So, with a cat who is his OH&S inspector, this painter / sculptor / teacher / builder may be one man you (my housemates) would love to talk to. His paintings are dark and baroque-like. Small in size, but very, very deep. Thank god we have a cat man in the exhibition.

Her pieces look very delicate, minimal & clean (every designers pre-requisites). She plays with layers and colours, with her ‘travel momories’ pieces making us all reminisce on the destinations we wish we were… especially during these wintery blue days…

We are over the moon to have Frances exhibit with us in August.

Working predominantly with charcoal and graphite on paper, he chooses imagery based upon the idea that getting back in touch with the natural world can give a refreshed and much simpler sense of reality. He draws to reflect this notion, and for himself to stay grounded.

The opening night is this Wednesday and you’re all invited to come along to this group exhibition;

Pop Up: Project is the inaugural event of Melbourne based art collective ‘Popup’ at BUS Projects. Comprising of local and international emerging artists, ‘Popup’ is a platform for experimentation and dialogue through spontaneous collaboration. The artists perpetually inhabit the spaces between mediums, performance and exhibition, creating makeshift spaces for their explorations of the often overlooked.

The works presented for Pop Up: Project explore the psychological and physical aspects of projection. A video can be projected on a wall, a concept can be projected through live performance, a viewer can project upon a painting.

In response to the unique site of BUS Projects, the exhibition will not use conventional lighting. Works will incorporate their own source of light or use light generated from other works. Light spill from Julia Zuleger’s video installation ‘Ways of Remembering’ will illuminate Aliça Bryson-Hayne’s painting installations. ‘Exist’ by Elizabeth Sampson will glow in the style of an exit sign – often an unwanted light source within a gallery context.

The exhibition is both individual and collaborative; a showcase of its founding members art practices. Performance, sculpture and installations will interact with each other, connected through light. The participating artists will present: video and light installations by Claire Robertson, Julia Zuleger, Shae Rooke and Elizabeth Sampson; painting installation by Aliça Bryson-Haynes; and live and recorded performances by Nicholas Chilvers.

More recently, Jade has begun experimenting in the third dimension and has become fascinated by the concept of taking a book out of its original context. To see the amazing book sculpture Jade has created for Kish+Co, please come along to our artist exhibition early next month.

Originally from Tasmania, Taj has been establishing himself as a creative director and designer in a multitude of art and design disciplines. His work ranges from large scale graffiti frescos to refined typography and creative identities, to printmaking and illustration.

“I see myself as a creative scientist with a boundless vision for the future.
I am currently exploring the nature of relationships through conversations between texture, form and colour. As a result of my work on the streets I am fascinated by the balance between ephemeral textures and the bold nature of geometry and the graphic language.”

Taj’s work has a sense of depth and attention to detail as if each layer has been carefully and equally considered throughout the process.

“I always consider each facet of the process. The aesthetic, thematic, conceptual and sub-conscious levels all need to be considered from a neutral viewpoint. I don’t need to think about the end product so much as the importance in maintaining awareness of the factors along the way. If these are handled well the results will be pure and most likely successful.”

For Taj, creativity is an integral part of living and developing as a person.
He sees his work as a philosophy inseparable from other aspects of his life.

We are excited to announce another talented artist we have on board for our exhibition - Rhiannon Mowat!

Rhiannon is an illustrator, a reader and a daydreamer. Her inspirations come from a lifelong love of stories, music and a general obsession with words.

Combining what she has learnt through a Bachelor of Arts in Writing and Editing and a Diploma of Illustration, Rhiannon can’t believe how lucky she is, because she gets to work with pictures and words every day.

When not taking part in exhibitions Rhiannon works as a freelance illustrator and more often than not will be found with a coffee at hand.

Introducing Hilde Thomsen – a Melbourne based artist with an adept hand at illustrating humorous caricatures and breathing life into her energetic characters with a skilled swoosh of ink and watercolour.

We’re lucky enough to have Hilde on board for our exhibition launch party but for a sneak peak of her work, Hilde will be part of the Brunswick street gallery opening in August – make sure to check it out!

The exhibition is themed around Asian folk art with Hilde’s pieces particularly inspired by the Chinese art form of Sumi brush painting. Taking cues from  Chinese face reading of the past, Hilde has combined her love for caricature with the Chinese system of physiognomy (which is thousands of years old!) by exaggerating the facial features of her characters.

The result is a unique study of human facial features, expressions and the stereotyped assumptions that people make based on these impressions, as Hilde describes it “swollen and defective forhead = cheater. Big + long nose = money control freak. Gap in front teeth = Unpredictable and prosperous. Mole on left ear = Problem with Father… and so on.. I could do a whole school of people! I hope this one illustration will be the start of a solo exhibition exploring this theme. The possibilities are endless.”

Hilde is a Melbourne-based Illustrator and artist from the fjords of Norway.

Her work is fresh and full of satire. Hilde has a unique voice in her illustrations and manages to capture the humour and energy in any subject matter.

Using ink and a splash of watercolour, she creates contemporary illustrations with a raw twist. Hilde has illustrated for newspapers, magazines and products around the world.

Introducing another exciting artist we have on board for our exhibition - Ned Culic!

From colourful and whimsical to subtle and serious, Ned’s memorable illustrations offer warmth, humour, style and originality.

One of Australia’s best known illustrators, Ned began his career as a Graphic designer in Melbourne. Over the years he has created images for some of the biggest advertising agencies, design studios and publishing companies across Australia and the world.

Ned’s stylistic flexibility has enabled him to work on a diverse range of projects for print and the web. His eye-catching visual language solutions have appeared on billboards, stamps, packaging, book jackets, motion graphics and t-shirts.

His award-winning work has been featured in major international publications including the Art Directors Club of New York Annual, Graphis Annual, theAustralian Graphic Design Association Collection, How Magazine and Lurzer’s Archive Best Illustrators Worldwide.

Angela is our gloat worthy General Manager. She’s a Vivienne Westwood fan and has Bachelor of Business Degrees in Marketing & Accounting.
She comes to us from the fashion industry. Managing timelines, clients
and relationships, she’s a charmer who will get back to you on time
and make sure you are taken care of.

Bronte and Toni studied alongside each other at Monash University whilst majoring in painting. It was there they discovered a shared interest in space, geometry, form, line and repetition; however it wasn’t until after graduating that they began to work collaboratively. Their work begins with a spark; one colour, shape or element of a decorative motif from history and it evolves from there.

Much of their work is very process-based, constantly evolving and changing in response to the space around it. Their practice often includes reusing found and collected objects and integrating these with new media.

Their works are varied in size ranging from whole rooms to small watercolour paintings on a wall. Although their installation works are temporary, there is always an element that can be kept, leaving a trace or skeleton of the idea.

Andrew Murray is a Melbourne based freelance graphic designer and also a talented illustrator. A recent graduate from Monash, his work aspires to communicate ideas that are both immediate and visceral.

Andrew’s graphic design is mixture of clever, concise, tongue-in-cheek humour, and visually aesthetic – as seen in his poster series promoting awareness for organ donation.

We are pleased to have Andrew on board in our exhibition for another one of his talents – his watercolour and ink expertise! Andrew’s distinctive style renders characters and scenes with seemingly effortless ease; casual, light-hearted swashes of colour, which come together to form a rich and layered story.

Diverging across a range of mediums and practices, Andrew has worked with a variety of clients, both big and small. Check out more of his work today on his website!

Working as a full time graphic designer, Jacinta amazingly manages to find extra time to pursue her love of colour, pattern and design through her exciting new textiles range Pom by Pomegranate. This label has allowed Jacinta to explore new screen-printing techniques and continue to develop her fine textiles skills.

All Pom by Pomegranate products are hand printed and made with much care and dedication. The patterns in Jacinta’s current collection are based on natural and organic matter, simplified into bold geometric shapes and incorporate an eclectic colour palette.

After graduating with a Bachelor of Visual Communication (Hons) majoring in Illustration, Laura decided to make the bold move from her hometown Wellington, New Zealand to Melbourne, Australia to soak up the diverse culture and creative atmosphere. Currently working as a freelance designer / illustrator, Laura enjoys drawing portraits and creating artwork for her younger audiences. Her biggest passion is for Children’s picture books and one day she hopes that she will have the opportunity to illustrate her own.

Laura is influenced by the artistic genius of James Jean, Tomer Hanuka, Laura Laine and Antoine de Saint-Exupery, however, her style is uniquely her own and demonstrates her accomplished illustration ability across a wide range of mediums.

Picking up his first camera at the age of 8, Joel Noon has always had a strong passion for photography. Preferring to shoot with a Nikon D7000, Joel has a variety of lenses including his current favourite the 50mm @ f1.4 for it’s crisp, clear and high quality output.

“I love the feeling of freezing a moment, or creating another world. Photography gives me ultimate freedom with my work”.

Joel is not afraid to admit that his work is often heavily Photoshopped. Working on a Mac and with the aid of Adobe’s CS5 creative suite, Joel believes that the digital age has allowed photographers to express themselves in even more creative ways by creating new worlds and unbelievable fictional fantasies.

Currently in his third and final year at Photography Studies College, Melbourne, Joel hopes to one day run his own studio and work closely with other photographers, stylists and makeup artists within the industry. He is also hopeful that through photography, he will have the opportunity to travel around the world.

We are very fortunate to have Chloe’s work featured in next months Kish+Co exhibition and are looking forward to hearing the different stories associated with many of her stunning pieces.

If you’re a fan of whimsical accessories, adorable necklaces and brooches, then you’ve probably already heard of or seen the handiwork of So Little Time Co.

From the iconic ‘dish & the spoon’ of the classic Mother Goose nursery rhyme, to other childhood favourites like ‘Incy Wincy Spider’ and ‘Humpty Dumpty’, So Little Time Co. draws on both nostalgic and modern ideas to create memorable wearables guaranteed to bring a smile to everyone’s face.

We are very pleased to have So Little Time Co. in our exhibition and would like to introduce you to one half of their clever venture – Kirsty Eckard!

Kirsty is a Melbourne based creative, lover of bright colours, illustrated and drawn typography, laser cut wood and anything that can be created by hand, especially if it involves cutting paper.

She currently channels her creativity into wearables for So Little Time Co, but is constantly expanding her brand, skills and abilities, with plans for more illustration and design-based work. She is passionate about design that starts on paper, and even more so if the outcome is tactile, and can be touched, appreciated and cherished.

One of the pieces Kirsty is exhibiting includes So Little Time’s ‘Locked in Time’ range of wearables, which was created as a way to keep photos and memories close to your heart in a stylish and unique fashion.

‘All illustrations are hand drawn, laser cut out onto Tasmanian Blackwood and carefully hand-painted. Each necklace is pieced together by hand, and is hung from chain and findings which are lead and nickel free’.

Liz Gridley is an artist / designer who has an ongoing fascination with human flesh, manipulation and figurative painting. Starting from a design background, Liz combines both worlds in her creative thinking.

“Creating a synergy between the painted surface, physical materiality and illusionistic perspective. I want the audience / client / public to connect, decipher, fall in love with non-reality and embrace the visually tactile.”

R first met Liz at Monash university in her painting elective (she needed to break away from her design electives). She remembers Liz distinctly, her paintings every week made everyone not only envious, but in awe of her beautiful brush techniques and colour palette. Liz went on to win the Tolarno Painting prize 2010 at Monash.

Liz Gridley is currently in her honours year, studying Visual Arts, majoring in painting. As well as working part time as a graphic designer, she has been in group  exhibitions around Melbourne, with the latest being ‘Entry 20.11′ at the Brunswick Arts Space.

Say hello to another artist we have on board -Tali Gal-on! The Melbourne based animator, designer and illustrator is a talented digital artist and has been ‘drawing since she could hold a pencil’.

Tali’s work concentrates on storytelling, particularly in distilling the magical way we looked at the world as children.

Tali’s short animated films have screened at over 30 festivals worldwide, including Annecy Animation Festival, Sydney Film Festival, and Melbourne International Animation Festival.

She has also worked on collateral for the ABC, including a variety of illustrations for ABC Kids Online and even the website design for the iconic show, Play School.

Introducing Melanie Matthews- another wonderful artist we have exhibiting in our Launch!

Having completed a Diploma in Arts: Illustration at Chisholm Tafe in 2009, Melanie now freelances as an illustrator and designer, creating ‘artwork for books, toys, online games, puzzles and lots of other fun things.’

Melanie specializes in digital illustration, using painted and also photos of found textures to add a tactile layer to her lively illustrations.

Fond of depicting creatures in the animal kingdom like her adorable ‘Tambourine Horse‘ (with ‘Mysterious Cosmic Powers!’) or her sleeping croc, Melanie also cleverly illustrates human characters and scenes, full of character and vibrant colour.

Melanie has worked with a variety of clients, including Toys R Us, Lemonfizz Media, Paddlepop Press, and the Petcare Information and Advisory Service.

Through observations of organic textures and forms and congruous colour palettes, Emily Green’s jewellery designs and artwork reflects her love of colour and the aesthetic of Melbourne’s inner north. Emily is originally from Perth and studied a Bachelor of Fine Arts at The University of Western Australia. She has been in Melbourne since 2005 is currently studying Textile Design part-time at RMIT.

Emily’s current jewellery range includes geometric brooches and pendants as well as colourful organic polymer clay necklaces. Emily works from her studio at Harvest Workroom in East Brunswick, where her range is created.

You’ll find Emily and her gorgeous jewellery at various art and craft markets around Australia including The Finders Keepers Market in Melbourne and the Bowerbird Bazaar in Adelaide just to name a few. Her beautiful range can also be found in many stores around Melbourne and may be purchased online via her website.

We are very excited to have Emily exhibit at the upcoming Kish+Co launch night and can’t wait to see the amazing work she is sure to produce.

A graduate from the University of Southern Queensland in 2006, Samantha Norman is a realistic figurative painter who now resides in Melbourne.

Her paintings are drawn from a female perspective of male and female nudes, usually in isolation. Norman’s paintings are so sought out for, erotic art collector Alex Mackay purchased her entire university portfolio and toured her pieces throughout regional Australia in 2008. She has also performed at the opening of ‘The Art of the Nude’ exhibition in Albury and in 2010 has worked as a drawing assistant for artist Tom Nicholson.

We welcome Samantha Norman as one of the artists we are collaborating with here at Miss Kish!

Just wait until you see her painting she did for us called “Two Loves” (2011).

Melbourne based artist Dawn Tan is a recent graduate of the Victorian College of The Arts, teacher at the Harvest Workroom and a ‘self-confessed foodie with a penchant for all things yummy and beautifully packaged.’

With a distinctive whimsical and cheerful illustrative style, Dawn’s recipe and food-packaging watercolor paintings are gathering quite a following far and wide. Recently Dawn’s splashes of colour and lively swooshes have been translated into a variety of different mediums, including tea towel prints, aprons and tote bags.

So we’re uber excited to announce that Dawn will be exhibiting at our Launch party in August – wait until you see the gorgeous painting she’s cooked up for us!

We recently visited his solo show ‘Before it fades out’ at No Vacancy and are beside ourselves to have him showcasing his skills at our launch / exhibition on August 12th. (We already have reserves for some of his limited edition prints, specially printed for our studio). If you happen to be in NY right now, go check out his group show ‘Ritual: A group exhibition by Honeycomb’ at Causey Contemporary in Brooklyn. It runs from July 12th to August 28th.

Twoone’s work is identifiable throughout the streets / eateries / shops of Melbourne. Whether they be paintings, illustrations or sculptural, his use of wood and hand made pieces are enriched with his mystical animal / human forms and dark, earthy tones.

This is one artist you will definitely want to keep your eye on. You need to check out his website. And follow his blog. Do it.

First up in the header image are porcelain bangles I want. From Lightfoot Prints in Brisbane, not many yet, but I’m sure we’ll all buy soon and she will have many, many more.

 
Next up, I found a gorgeous website called “The Makers” - filled with loveliness from NYC. I just spoke with a distressed Doctor D who is concerned about not knowing where to shop when in NY. Pray don’t stress, just head over to Brooklyn with every address on this website in your address book. Heart. Heart. Heart.

And lastly, my latest love. Robert Montgomery. I saw him somewhere before I found him on Lost at E Minor. I love the brave and the confronting messages in his works. I love their size and the way he frames them – whether its under a subway or on a pier. If its type done well, well then, that deserves more than blog love. It deserves a healthy doze of stalking. Jokes. Wow. He’s genius though and I hope you agree My other favourite is here and did I forget to say how much I heart poetry?

Kish, go drool somewhere else, you’re soaking the blog up.

A weekend ago, V & I dropped into Pillar of Salt. May have had something to do with a major SPACE & Poliform sale on nearby. But nevertheless.
It was a lazy Sunday morning, where there are no plans (this is like any other Sunday for us) and I start driving while V lists the brekkie options.
The interiors are stunning and the light shining thru the windows makes it even better. Keep an eye out for their treats near the cashier.

We had the banana bread (I like to tell myself that this is a healthy option) and the beans (soft taco) pictured above. The beans are meant to be with fried egg, so if it looks lacking, it was a tad. But my bad – I should find a salad!

We loved their coffee – more so, their Jimmy’s Indonesian iced coffee. Delish. Usually, I’d rate this place and come back again and again – but I need more vego options. See here and feel sorry for me, please! I can’t convert, just can’t.

Sometimes, posts are so overdue, its ridiculous. I visited Hut 13 two weeks ago and so much has happened since.
V and I fought and made up. My ankle got bunged and is now strapped. Agnes made amazing cupcake pops. We sent out invites for the Kish+Co launch and my newest guilty pleasure is Gossip Girl. xo xo. Yes, terribly late on the bandwagon, but honey, I would rather be late than really into it. Oxymoron much?

Meanwhile, back to Hut 13, which is coolness personified. The lovely ladies present, will manage to have you engaged to them before you leave. Passionate about the artists and the pieces, they will talk you through Mirka Mora, Emma Davies (pictured above) and our favourite, Emily Green – whom, can we just say, is going to be a part of our artists exhibition on August 12! Woot

If one refers to Picasso as a master of the paintbrush then you could almost say Becky is a master of the piping bag (well the cake-decorating sector anyhow).

Earlier this year Becky was kind enough to bake delicious Valentine’s Day cupcakes for Miss Kish that the office all…er, the clients all enjoyed very much (it was hard not to keep all the cupcakes for ourselves they were that delish).

Becky is a true creative when it comes to cake decorating and she happily creates custom cakes for her clients, be the occasion for a birthday, christening or just to sate that sweet tooth!

V and I often go to South Melbourne markets (sorry, side note, his preference is Vic Markets because he knows whom to bargain with and where to get the best coriander from as well)…
I urge you to go. Try those amazing pistachio thingees pictured above – I don’t remember the name, but they are delicious! It’s a small fit out, but nicely done. Tricky to find within the market – look for the seafood and the deli area.

St. Edmonds cafe is sexy. Perfectly placed just off Greville Street, you can see Tax Alexanders work from afar and find yourself stepping into their coolness.
They’ve been blogged about at sites like Broadsheet / Weekly Review and D’Marge. (Sorry, my pictures do no justice, iphone after hours gets grumpy).

They’ve ticked all the boxes; location, interiors, damn good coffee, food which is very, very different from most Melbourne cafes (hello, edamame peas) and a night menu.

I’ve read so many mixed reviews about MissChu, that I’m wondering if my non-Vietnamese-ness is really hindering my ability to judge food. Or maybe its because I go weak in the knees for a dumpling. Who knows. Interiors are certainly cool, fitting so much, spaciously into a tight area, with dish lighting and large wallpaper prints, its looking awesome.
We took W the first time – his rating wasn’t super high, but that being said, he certainly scoffed the meal down Then it was Dr. D, she was feeling the love and like me, is a paper roll fan.

Overall, I’d definitely go back, I loved their rice paper rolls and their dumplings, plus service was prompt and friendly. Hearting you MissChu!

PS, for all your vegetarians out there – this is a place with many, many options.

I know Chez Dré is already all over the blogosphere – but this lovely lady deserves huge love. Amazing / delicious / awesomeness!
I’ve already recommended it to heaps of my friends – but this is for you, pictures galore of delicious food (I’m not usually so superfluous with my compliments…).

You may enter from the rear – for a view of the tables out the back leading you straight to the macaroons.

Thereafter, you can admire the wood grain on the tables and order a macaroon. Of course there are more flavours than chocolate – of course chocolate was the one I had to have…

Then it might occur to you to actually feed your belly! This is a roast vegie and tofu baguette. There are many more. All with a carrot salad on a wooden platter. If you are super hungry, like W (who biked over from North Melbourne) – then you may have two baguettes.

Then you can scab off your friends dessert – yoghurt mousse with almonds + apricot? Si si oui oui. I had to do a takeaway for V to make up for missed times. DIVINE. (And I’m usually an only chocolate girl)….

The good news, is the lady is inventive. N says the blood orange piece of art pictured is a new addition to the menu. So all the more reason to go back….

I’d initially heard about Axil from Mr. Lawler - and then from  Happy2ServeYou. And it was so so worth it. I went in a grumpy mood and this is when it’s V’s role to cheer me up – with what works best, food…We had a waiter come up to us immediately and seat us – the space is huge, so theres that slight moment where you’re thinking “gah! where should I go!”. Theres all day brekkie and more. Their juices are also delish. See V’s bircher muesli in our main image up top and my corn fritters below.

Yes, they had avocado, haloumi, corn and salsa. You can have it with a poached egg if thats how you roll as well.

And, as per your expectations of me, the interiors are schmick. So fine. Done by the folks over at ST Style.

Another concept involved creating a die cut of the doily pattern so the business card would look like a delicate piece of doily itself

Usually, we narrow down a colour palette much later – as well as font placement. Its always more about getting the imagery from head to paper out.
The best part is printing them all off, critiquing them and choosing the ones we feel will work best for this purpose and showing the client our tight selection.

We recently heard of the Yuria, via our friend Jacinta, over at Pomegranate.
She’s going to be a part of our launch party (save-the-date emails coming soon!) and we wanted to share her upcoming gallery event in June.
Her paper drawings have won her the Siemens RMIT award for Fine Art.

Here is her artists statement

My works are a conflation of geometric abstraction with traditional, culturally specific designs derived from Japanese garden and architecture, in which I aim to develop a pictorial space that has a meditative quality.

My images are created through the use of diluted acrylic, ink and marks made through embossing. I aim to create a spatial illusion and a sense of depth through the use of geometry and architectural references.

Both the visual qualities and philosophy behind Japanese gardens, particularly Zen gardens, influence my works. Inspired by such garden designs, I seek to inspire contemplation by making images that need prolonged examination of intricate surface marks and ink drawings.

For drinks, I ordered the Manzana – Sidre Escanciador and La Goya Manzanilla. Don’t ask why. I thought it would be interested to consume a beverage whose ingredients I didn’t know how to pronounce… It was yum. I don’t know what D & V ordered, I can assure you, it can’t have been as memorable as mine.

Guindillas - Artisan mild Pickled Peppers
As the maître d’ forewarned, some were spicy, however not the majority. They are soooooo delicious. I would go back purely for the pickled peppers.

Other fantastic things…
Queso Idiazabal – Smoked Sheep’s Milk Cheese
I like cheese. I can stomach most of the range as well. This is delish. And more-ish as well.

Alcachofas - Fried Globe Artichoke with Almonds and Lemon
Everyone liked this – personally, I didn’t really “get” it. I thought it was nice, but definitely not the highlight. If we’re talking fried things, my highlight is the zucchini flowers with baba ganoush inside from MoMos.

Naranja - Citrus Salad with Mandarin Sorbet
D & V are huge fans of this. D likens it to the coconut sorbet at Longrain on Little Bourke (upper end of Chinatown). However, I liken it to healthy food. Dessert must be bad for you – rule of thumb.

Churros con Chocolate - Spanish Doughnuts with rich drinking Chocolate
I know some of you “foodies” may want to whack me for saying this (thank god for the internets)… but I much prefer the San Churros version – with dark chocolate. I just do. It was probably authentic and perfect – but really, I was left craving for something intensely chocolatey!

I first read about this grand idea here on Dave’s Blog – well done to Colenso BBDO (Auckland) for some genius-ness!

There are so many things I agree with:

1. Creatives don’t give enough credit to where their grand ideas come from. There is no harm in credit, in my opinion, the more love you give, the more you get.

2. TED Videos are awesomeness.

3. I love the last statement on the clip:

I hope you like it. V’s first reaction was “…banks are so smart…” and I agree – totally, but I like this kinda smart!

Rebecca Hossack Art Gallery was one of my top favourites. The book pieces below are by Phil Shaw. Don’t be deceived, there is more to it than a bookshelf picture. Each collection of books is tied to a theme. One of them was 4648 Ways to Make Love. And I kid you not, all the book titles were related to “ways of making love”. Art that makes you smile always wins me over. Of course, I had to show Maggie & have a giggle as well.

I also spotted some of Kate Jenkins work. Can I just say, I had a “glory moment” – because I’ve seen her stuff all over the blogosphere well before 2011. YEAH. Talent spotter moment. Will now stop glorifying myself. Love her stuff. Love how sexy she makes her pieces – this one is titled “Tinned Sardines in Tomato”. She is too cool.

There was also the sexy Rob Tucker. Whom I didn’t know was Rob Tucker. Then I said to him “are you manning the stall — busy weekend aye” etc. type of crap chit-chat you never have with an artist if you are sophisticated. Doctor D seemed to find this hilarious. I didn’t.

I quite liked Cathyann Coady’s pieces as well. It’s hard to explain why I love her giant size pills. I just do.  They made me smile – and thats how I know when something is a keeper! If I could, I would buy a set of pills. Truly.

Doctor D bought two pieces from Warlukurlangu – stunning pieces. I’m getting one framed and waiting for V (finance man) to approve the cost of the frame of the latter! Dear…

Highly recommended event – do it… Next year! And holla if you want to come with the Kish gang!
